WEIGH-IN WEDNESDAY
Yippee!! Good news 2lbs OFF!! Yes I've finally kicked that darn Plateau into a Splateau!!
POPPIES at the TOWER
"Blood Swept lands and Seas of Red"
My Panorama Shot - pleased with this - good old iPhone 6
Today I did something I'd been meaning to do for a long time - so - prompted by the news that tomorrow they were going to dismantle this extraordinary national monument to the country's war dead - I headed off to the Tower to see it for myself. I wasn't disappointed.
888,246 Ceramic Poppies had been planted in the Tower Moat. Each Poppy represented a military fatality in the First World War. At 11:00am today there had been a 2 minute silence followed by a 21 Gun Salute. Then a 13 year old Army Cadet - Harry Hayes - planted the final poppy.
At the same time I was actually at Waterloo Station - where we had our own 2 minute silence followed by The Last Post played on the bag pipes:
The Last Post Piper
I then headed out along by the river to the Globe Theatre. I reckoned that taking the tube to the Tower would be a nightmare today with the crowds arriving for the Final Day, so I came up with
the idea of taking the river bus from the Globe over the Thames to the Tower.
The River Bus
It worked out perfectly not only did I avoid the crowds on the way there as the river bus dropped me right by the Tower, but when I got there - because I had my walking cane with me - I was ushered into a special viewing area for the disabled!! (What a Jammy Bugger I hear you cry) - and you would be right. I had a fantastic view. Check out some of my photos:
These were my photos above - here are a few below which I really like from the Daily Telegraph:
The planted poppies represent 100 years since the first full day's involvement of Great Britain in the First World War.
The man who made the ceramic flowers said that he took the title of the installation from a will made in the trenches by an unnamed soldier from his home town of Derby. "Reading through the wills I came across one written by a man who said everyone he knew had been killed. He wrote of blood swept lands and seas of red, where angels dare to tread. It read like a poem and seemed to fit" says the artist.
Shows the full expanse of the installation
War Horse makes a Visit.
All the poppies have been sold off individually at £25 per poppy. The sales of which have reached £15 Million for various service charities. I wish I'd known before - I'd love to have bought one.
FITBIT STATS FOR THE TRIP TO THE TOWER
My trip to the Tower:
13,882 Steps
6.18 Miles
2,998 Calories Burned
And Fitbit called me Champ three times!
ST VINCENT
On Monday night my friend Rupert and I went to another Screening - this time it was
St Vincent with Bill Murray. The film starts very well and is very funny with a central performance with Bill Murray as the naughty neighbour, which is a master class in dry abuse. But it ends with such mawkish sentimentality that all the good is undone. Dare I say some Americans can't resist making a film like this. Oops I know I'm going to get in trouble for that!!
And then there was FURY - I'm afraid the less said about that - the better. A pretty dire film with some extremely ropey dialogue. However the film did contain a rather nice cameo by some one that I'd worked with in the KINGS SPEECH - Daniel Betts, who played Bertie's brother. Rupert was the one who spotted him.
Rupert - My Plus One Screening Date
Rupert sent me a Comment for last week - today (!!) which I'm going to include this week:
"What an honour it was to make your blog this week - not just a mention, but a whole feature. Having been a feature in The Gay Times in the past I thought I would never feel so important again but I was wrong - this trumps it. I still need to remind you that it was in ITV's Doc Martin that we met although that meeting was brief and in a costume fitting and you said very little. But in those days you lived in LA and were a movie star so I understood why you didn't give me a lowly fresh actor the time of day. It was indeed Never So Good where you finally said more than 2 words to me I think you were blown away by the way I said my one line.
Thanks for the house photos too. If I ever need to sell I can put them straight up on Zoopla.
Congratulations on your ongoing success with the blog and pound loss - I do feel somewhat responsible for your recent plateau though. Being your 'plus one' of the month I may have bullied you into the odd whiskey sour to appease my gin habit so I will endeavour to stop and be more
supportive."
COMMENTS
You know what to do - email them to me if you like - all welcome good or bad....
WOW! First to comment and first to send hearty congratulations! LOSS! YES ! RESULT! FAN****INGTASTIC! Thrilled that the scales are going the right way and that fitbit is declaring you a champ - excellent.
ReplyDeleteI am gutted not to have seen the poppy sea - I've been following the images and can only imagine how it must have felt to be there.
Once again - many congrats. Let it never be said that the Evil One doesn't give credit when it's due,

You genius-what GREAT news. That's a good solid loss. VERY VERY proud. Your Poppies made me cry-what a stunningly moving images you have captured. Can't tell which are yours or the telegraph's! I take the river boats lots with my small Ruskies and love them-the boats you understand not the Ruskies. Though I am very partial to some of those as well...oh shut up and get bacvk to the point.! Thrilled to be second off the blocks this week. big love and big congrats on a loss of note. Love as always xxxxxxx
ReplyDeleteHooray! You are a weight loss genius. Keep it up. So happy for you. Love love love the pics of the poppies at the Tower of London. Big kiss, Ems X
ReplyDeleteComment from CHRIS LUSCOMBE:
ReplyDeleteExtremely proud of you for continuing with your diet. It's such an achievement, Ian. You are an inspiration.
Congrats! So happy for you! Damn that plateau! I know that losing these two pounds will keep you motivated and inspired! Love that you saw the installation at the Tower! So beautiful! And there you are getting into the special viewing area because of your cane. Reminds me of the time we first went to Universal Studios (with one or several of the kids) and we got to cut every line because you had your "stick". Some things never change! I also love following your fit bit updates! Such a great gift from Trav and the Mrs. SO, I know we briefly spoke about your next tentative goal, and I know you can achieve it by the end of the year. You're getting close! Extremely proud of you!
ReplyDeleteHere is something I meant to send last week and didn't. Please read as it makes a lot of sense and several people have mentioned this in previous blogs............
"Water isn't just "good for you" — water burns fat. Water suppresses hunger. Water renews your skin. Just drinking 12 ounces of pure water every day can take a few years off your face in a matter of weeks. You'll also drop fat, have more energy, and save your kidneys and liver from chronic overwork.
When your kidneys are taxed from too little water, your liver has to take over. Now, get this: Your liver is your number one fat-burning organ. Do you REALLY want it processing liquids and toxins rather than BURNING FAT? No way, right? Well, grab a glass of water, and watch the mirror. Within a few weeks, the change to your face and body will be noticeable."
I concur with Luscombe as I too am extremely proud of you! I'll let you know about the inspiration bit though!
Well done!
Love, Cins xxoo
Haha I love Cindy's comment! The poppies look bloody stunning. What a great thing to have been able to see. And I love the idea of them selling the poppies to generate money for charity, genius. I think us boys need to head back to England soon before this Rupert fellow decides to swoop in and take over as best son! Congrats on the loss Dad, well done, and proud of you with sticking with it, but a 2lbs loss is a great result this week. We need to skype soon! Much ove, Trav
ReplyDeleteWell done you CHAMP!! So proud of you! I knew the last few weeks were nothing to worry about and you now have your mojo back skinny pops! I am bloody impressed. Wow, I have to say I am amazed by the quality of the photos coming out of the iPhone 6, as well as your eye for taking beautiful pictures. Is the phone a dream? Is that a app to do the panorama or is it part of the built in camera? So sad I haven’t been able to check those poppies out. I read an article on them a while ago and was desperate to see them in real life. 25 isn’t bad at all, very clever to sell them individually at such an affordable price! I love you lots xxxxx
ReplyDeleteTwo quick questions: does Cins know about Rupert...? And I ask again WHAT HAPPENED TO ROME?
ReplyDeleteE1
Congratulations! And before anyone says anything about me coming in 9th place this week, I'm not late, I'm just prolonging the enjoyment of the comments by extending them into Thursday.
ReplyDeleteI'm also jealous of your trip to the tower, what a great installation. And a great excuse to rack up the fitbit points. I'm embarrassingly dependent on the little buzzbuzz on my wrist and hardly go anywhere without it, lest I not receive "credit" for my exertions - even if it's just grocery shopping. I'm addicted.
I second Cindy's water suggestion. We all need to hydrate more, but especially now that you're so much more active than before. I find a chilled glass of water first thing in the morning revives me more than a cup of coffee. But enough about me.
I second Evil One's comment as well, (this is what happens when you're last to the party you end up parroting everyone else's clever comments...) What about Rome!?
Keep it up!
Comment from DAVID HINCHLIFFE:
ReplyDeleteWell done on the 2lbs dear friend..and equally on getting to the head of the queue to witness that spectacular poppy installation at the Tower...very clever you waving that stick about. I remember when my crutches got me straight on to a wheelchair at Heathrow in March and I was wheeled by an attendant for miles through security etc. What fun.
Loved Cindy's list of the good things water does for us. I think she may have left out one of its lesser known properties -- a large intake of water quickly candy winders for the bowels...but perhaps that's another blog.
Meanwhile I'm enjoying catching up with son Joe in Moree -- which despite being the backside of nowhere, is actually a pretty cool Aussie country town. Joe's already the toast of the community. He's loving it. If you want to see what we've been up to, friend me on Facebook and have a look at the pics. We've had a ball.
Tomorrow (Friday) we're chartering a small plane to take us up over the plains of Moree down to local National Park. Can't wait.
Fond regards to Cindy, Gus and the rest of your wonderful family.
Cheerio from david (and Joe) in sun-blasted Moree (where temperatures are soaring above 100!)
I feel ashamed that I have to start this comment with an apology for my absence on your blog, I have no excuses. Congratulations on your loss! Your stats for the trip to the monument were amazing, I barely walk 6 miles in a day!
ReplyDeleteI am sad to hear about St Vincent, i was really looking forward to seeing that. I read a funny story about how the writer tried to get Murray on board the project and had to go through various strange loops to finally speak to him, I'll try find the article. Miss you! oaks xx
Comment from ANGUS:
ReplyDeleteYes! A loss! Such great news. And also the rarest of rare creatures: a nice note from Monger! Unreal. Wish I could have gone with you to the memorial, and what a result on fitbit - might have beaten our walks around Prague. So happy the pounds are sliding off again, I'm sure you must be relieved to be back on track again as well. Love you, G x
